Attending the CSEG GeoConvention was a great opportunity to interact with both the academic and the industry of exploration geophysics. I am thankful for the CSEG for organizing this event and to the CSEG-F for funding me to attend it.

I am very lucky to be selected to receive a CSEG Foundation Travel Grant and Learning Subsidy to attend the 3rd Annual CSEG Symposium. This Symposium is really valuable. As the first student from McGill University to apply for funding from the CSEG Foundation, I appreciate getting this chance and I can spread the news of these events and the Foundation around my friends and classmates here. Coming from Ontario, mostly surrounded by hard rock, we have a great deal of focus on igneous and metamorphose rocks. It was interesting to see the different takes on the education of the Earth Sciences across the country. The representatives at Repsol and Divestco gave great insight into the various roles of geophysicists and the workshop put on by Imperial was interesting as we never had anything like that to do at UofT. I learned a lot from the talks there and the assignment we worked through. It was really neat to see the Schlumberger truck both inside and out and the tools they had set up; I never saw a truck before. It was also amazing to see the vibrating truck set up by CREWES; we don’t have any of those at UofT.

Willapa Bay, Washington, offers an excellent opportunity for graduate students unfamiliar with modern sedimentology and ichnology to view and discuss trends in numerous depositional environments, as well as learn how modern techniques may be applied to the rock record. The graduate and undergraduate students involved are incredibly thankful to CSEG for providing the necessary financial support for their AAPG/ATLAS field trip.

As a geology and geophysics student from Quebec, I found that GIFT’s first day was very instructive on the workings of the oil and gas industry. Many speakers informed us on all the different career perspectives, on the ways to enter the industry and on the challenges that being a geophysicist may imply.
