CSEG Meritorious Service Award Recipient Citation for Oliver Kuhn

It is my sincere pleasure and honour to write this citation for my friend and colleague, Oliver Kuhn, with whom I have been associated as RECORDER editor for the last four years.
Oliver is a well-known name in the Calgary seismic processing world and has been a mentor to many geophysicists. He graduated from the University of Western Ontario, where he earned a degree in Geophysics in 1984. He started his career then as a processing geophysicist with Geo-X Systems in Calgary. He soon acquired the expertise required of a successful processor in terms of the application of appropriate algorithms and flows, spending eight years processing seismic data for local companies. After serving one year in Singapore with Geo-X, Oliver had a brief two year stint with Geco-Prakla in New Zealand and Australia. However, he could not resist the lure of both Calgary and Geo-X Systems, and so got back to resume his career with the parent company. He has been working there now for more than 18 years. Presently, he serves as General Manager, Processing. Oliver's enthusiasm, critical thinking and optimism and his unselfish help to others are well known.
Oliver is also well known in the business for his volunteer efforts. Over the years he has generously volunteered his time for CSEG activities and sometimes has simultaneously held more than one portfolio. He was associated with the Ski Spree as In-charge of registration (2000, 2001), Chair (2002) and Past Chair (2003, 2004), with Doodlebug as In-charge of registration (2000, 2001), 50th anniversary special events (2002), Vice-chair (2003) and Chair (2004), RECORDER Technical Editor (2000 – 2003), Asst. Technical Editor (since 2003), Website Committee (since 2002), CSEG Superfund Committee (for as long as it existed), and was Technical Chairman for the CSEG Convention for 2002.
The improvement in the quality of the RECORDER since October 2000, is largely a result of the mutual cooperation we both have had and being receptive to each other's constructive ideas, of course with the able support from other Committee members. Whether it is conducting interviews or inviting articles for Special Issues, Oliver was always there willing to shoulder responsibility. I recall in planning a particular issue of the RECORDER he did not receive articles on the planned focal theme. On his own initiative, Oliver was able to get articles on another equally interesting theme. This goes to speak of Oliver's sense of responsibility.
Oliver has given lectures and courses at his company offices and has been an invited speaker and session co-chair at the CSEG luncheon and Convention. He is a member of CSEG, SEG, CSPG and APEGGA.
Oliver's high work ethic, optimistic attitude, perseverance, willingness to work with everyone, and his wonderful sense of humour, have earned him wide respect.
After geophysics, Oliver passionately enjoys golfing, tennis and snowboarding. At any beckoning opportunity he likes to take to the slopes with his family.
On behalf of all the CSEG members, I express my sincere congratulations to Oliver, and I look forward to many more years of the wonderful rapport we have shared as CSEG volunteers.
