David Gray - 2015
This year the CSEG Symposium honours a man who represents one of the best models for a modern industrial geophysicist: David Gray. Dave has been a long time CSEG volunteer and contributor to industry. He has been involved in an incredibly broad spectrum of modern advances including work on deconvolution, AVO, azimuthal anisotropy methods, and geomechanics. His work spans the conventional, to tight sands and shales, to heavy oil. Further, Dave has worked just about every side of these problems. He has been involved in processing, research, software, and on the oil and gas company side of all of these issues and innovations. The perspective that Dave has developed as a result of his varied positions and interests is visionary. By having experience and contributions that touch upon such a vast array of modern techniques, Dave has become an archetype of the modern geophysicist. In honoring Dave Gray, the CSEG rewards its members with a day in which the problems of the modern geoscientist can be explored. Join us and Dave Gray as we look at the connections both intricate and sublime of the modern geophysical world.
David Gray is a well-respected name in Calgary and he is a man who has gained recognition abroad through his publications and presentations. David received a B.Sc. in Honours Geophysics from the University of Western Ontario in 1984 and a Masters of Math in Statistics from the University of Waterloo in 1989. In his early days, David worked as a seismic data processor, research geophysicist and senior research advisor at Veritas/CGGVeritas. He now resides at Nexen working as a Senior Technical Advisor, where he is responsible for geophysical reservoir characterization in their Oil Sands Resource Development group.
David’s impressive technical contributions to our industry are broad and very relevant. He has done extensive work on deconvolution, AVO, and LMR and was an early visionary in working with AVAz and fracture detection, leading to the development of patented methods. He is a master of the geomechanical art of estimating horizontal stresses and fracture initiation pressures from seismic anisotropy, while validating such stress results in tight oil and gas reservoirs. David has authored and co-authored many journal articles and has delivered a copious number of presentations about his work at conferences and workshops. He has won awards for Best Geophysical Poster at the 2009 CSPG/CSEG/CWLS Joint Convention and Best of the SEG D & P Forum presentation. He is a member of several professional societies including CSEG, SEG, EAGE, SPE and APEGGA, and is an active volunteer on many committees. In his spare time, David likes to engage with his family, play volleyball and participate in grassroots motorsports.
