Shawn Maxwell - 2013

Technical Achievement Award Recipient Shawn Maxwell

Shawn Maxwell Shawn Maxwell is Chief Geophysicist and Microseismic Advisor for Schlumberger's Hydraulic Fracture Monitoring corporate business unit, and is based in Calgary, Alberta. He is responsible for development, implementation and culturing of Schlumberger's microseismic services. Prior to Schlumberger, he has been a pioneer in the introduction of commercial microseismic services for hydraulic fracture imaging as Chief Geophysicist with Pinnacle Technologies in Calgary; Manager of Petroleum Services with ESG; and Lecturer at Keele University in England. He is currently an adjunct professor at University of Calgary.

Shawn was awarded a Ph.D. in earthquake seismology, an M.Sc. in Engineering Physics and a B.Sc. in Geophysics from Queen's University. He has 30 years of experience in a broad range of microseismic monitoring applications, including mapping hydraulic fractures, fracture networks, steam floods, gas floods, water floods, casing failures, reservoir compaction, gas storage and sequestration, excavation damage around underground tunnels, and mining induced seismicity and rockbursts.

Shawn has been active in projects globally, and his expertise includes geomechanical interpretation of hydraulic fracturing from microseismic, velocity tomography of active and passive seismicity, seismic raytracing, waveform modeling, in addition to microseismic source characterization, data acquisition, processing and interpretation. Shawn has authored over 100 publications in journals and professional abstracts.

He acts as the passive seismic associate editor for Geophysics, is the Education Director for the CSEG, chairs the Microseismic User Group (MUG), has lead numerous microseismic industry technical short courses, and chaired various industry workshops for the SPE, SEG and EAGE. Shawn is also a 2013 SPE Distinguished Lecturer and has been lecturing on 'What Have We Learned About Fracturing Shales After 12 Years Of Microseismic Mapping?' As well, Shawn is the 2014 SEG DISC instructor, i.e. the Distinguished Instructor Short Course on 'Microseismic Imaging of Hydraulic Fracturing: Improved Engineering of Unconventional Shale Reservoirs'.

Shawn receives the CSEG Technical Achievement Award from Rob Kendall, Past President, on March 17th, when Shawn's first SEG 2014 DISC was held in Calgary.
