Will my data process?  Will my data invert (CANCELLED)

Instructor(s): Andrea Crook and Stephanie Ross
Date: Nov. 1 - 4, 2021
Duration: 4 half-days
Format: WEBINAR
Time: 1:00pm – 5:00pm each day

Course Description

In this course, geoscientists will review seismic acquisition and processing parameters to determine if the geometry is appropriate for advance processing and/or inversion. The course will focus on specific questions such as frequency content vs. resolution, offsets required for imaging steep dips, near offset distribution and angle gathers, and the challenges of acquiring high-resolution shallow seismic surveys. Students will investigate how seismic acquisition parameters such as geometry, source selection, survey size, and surface exclusions impact seismic imaging, and learn how the decisions made during acquisition directly affect the ability to process and invert the data.

Target Audience

Geoscientists considering processing or inversion, but uncertain if the seismic data is appropriate for the intended purposes.

Special Information

Students will require a laptop (or workstation) to complete course exercises. Students may either be provided with software for the exercises or access to software hosted on a virtual machine. This will be determined closer to the date of the course. If students are provided with software, licensing will be set up the week prior to the start of the course.

Biography

Andrea Crook, P.Geoph., is the President of OptiSeis Solutions Ltd., which she founded in 2011. OptiSeis provides innovative acquisition solutions for acquiring high resolution seismic data both through consulting services and geophysical acquisition software. As President, she currently oversees seismic acquisition design projects, software development, and seismic acquisition research into reducing the environmental impact of seismic programs in boreal forests. Andrea’s previous experience includes seismic processing and geophysical operations at Shell Canada, where she worked on many high-resolution and experimental seismic acquisition projects, and geophysical consulting on both mining and oil & gas seismic programs at Boyd PetroSearch/RPS. Andrea is an instructor for the SEG and the CSEG Doodletrain and was the recipient of the 2019 CSEG Technical Achievement Award for her outstanding technical contributions in the field of Canadian Geophysics over the past five years. She can be reached via email at Andrea.Crook@optiseis.com or 403-452-3615.

Stephanie Ross began her processing career at Gulf Canada Resources, in the days of mainframe computers and 80 column card input. Over the years she worked at Western Geophysical, Geco-Prakla, CGG, Arcis and Edge Technologies. She has processed land data from all over the world, with marine data occasionally thrown in for good measure, and ultimately specialized in high-resolution processing, primarily in the WCSB, as well as front-end processing and refraction. Over Stephanie’s career, she has designed and implemented many successful processing flows and trained many junior processors in the fine art of seismic processing. As a result of this long experience, she is now happily affiliated with Optiseis Solutions, assisting with and providing processing and training for staff and clients. Stephanie recently wrote and presented a hands-on processing course designed for interpreters. She can be reached via email at Stephanie.Ross@optisies.com or mobile 403-619-1301.
