Biography
Kris Innanen received the BSc and MSc degrees from York University in Physics and the PhD degree from UBC in geophysics. He has held faculty appointments at the University of Houston (2005-09), and the University of Calgary (2009-present). In 2016 he became the director of the CREWES project. His interests range from seismic modelling and acquisition, through to processing and inversion of seismic data.
Description
The purpose of this course is to provide a hands-on experience designed to develop intuition about the ingredients and work-flows of seismic full waveform inversion (FWI). Focusing on concepts (i.e., with a minimum of math), and with guided steps through simple computer examples, we will introduce and explore residuals, gradients, Hessian operators, single- and multi-parameter problems, and iterations, and learn how FWI builds these using physics models of wave propagation. The goal is to leave students with a clear sense of what FWI can do with our data -- but also what FWI demands those data be like. In our numerical examples, we will hit head-on the main difficulties of FWI: cycle-skipping, parameter cross-talk, and computational expense, and -- sometimes -- avert them.
