Abstract

Ron Tenove, P.Eng., heads the largest professional association in Alberta and has a clear understanding of the realities of today and a strong vision of where the professions are heading and how to get there. With total membership now exceeding 38,000, APEGGA faces many challenges from our changing professions and new areas of practice not yet regulated. Ron's vision for the future of technology professions worldwide raises many questions that must be answered concerning the relationship between the various groups of practitioners. He will share with us some of the exciting developments taking place nationally and internationally concerning mobility of professionals and tell us about some of the ways in which APEGGA is responding to the particular needs of geoscientists in Alberta.

Specific focus during this presentation will be given to:

  • Hear how will APEGGA is responding to meet the challenges of changing professions and to recognize the need to attract skilled workers at all levels and provide for integration of technology professionals.
  • Learn about the plans to recognize highly skilled and experienced geoscience technologists so they can practice their skills independently and take responsibility for their work.
  • Find out what APEGGA is doing to allow licensed geoscientists to move freely throughout Canada to practice their professions.
  • Find out how new office and conference facilities in Calgary will provide enhanced service and direct contact with geoscientists.
  • Find out why all qualified geoscientists must be licensed to practice in Alberta, how the registration process has changed and hear about all the benefits that membership in a professional association provide.

Biography

Ron Tenove, P.Eng., the current APEGGA president, is an Albertan who earned his B.Sc. and M.Eng. degrees from the University of Alberta in 1970 and 1971. He has more than 30 years experience as a consulting engineer working throughout Western Canada in project, manager and executive positions. In recent years, as a marketing consultant and executive coach, Ron has extended his geographic portfolio into the U.S. and Western Europe.

Ron is a strong advocate of continuous professional development. He has taken periodic management, geophysics and environmental chemistry courses to complement his project management role on a wide diversity of projects in the geo-environmental industry. He has presented workshops on a variety of professional development topics including contract employment and entrepreneurship (APEGGA PD Days).

He opened R.S.Tenove, P.Eng., Professional Services in 1996, working in the water utility and advanced technology sectors to develop and implement strategies for the advancement and marketing of new technologies and business practices. He is presently Director, Corporate Development, with the Focus Corporation Ltd., and is part of the executive team introducing advanced geomatics technologies and infrastructure engineering services in Canada and internationally.

Ron is also very involved in programs assisting others to grow as professionals, including a term as President of the Consulting Engineers of Alberta in 1995-96. Active in community programs, Ron is on the Board of Make-A-Wish Foundation, raising awareness and granting wishes to children with life threatening illnesses.

Ron has written and presented technical papers on infrastructure assessment, geomechanics and value engineering in Canada, the U.S., Australia and Norway.

He and his wife Pat, a physiotherapist, have two grown sons Christopher and Colin. Pat and Ron enjoy travelling, walking, gardening and family time.
