Abstract
AVO (amplitude variation with offset) can provide important subsurface information, but like any geophysical tool, study and experience are required to optimize its value. Research over the past several years has helped to clarify certain aspects of AVO, such as spherical wave effects, post-critical inversion, and relationships among methods commonly used in industry.
In parallel to this research, a variety of applet "explorers" have been developed that can be used to illustrate AVO principles and provide quick insight into practical questions. In this presentation I will describe research results along with corresponding, publicly available applets.
Biography
Dr. Charles Ursenbach is a Senior Research Scientist with CGGVeritas in Calgary. Chuck Ursenbach began his career in applied physics obtaining Chemical Physics degrees at the University of Calgary and University of British Columbia. He gained further experience in postdoctoral work at Oxford University and the University of Pennsylvania, and as an assistant professor at Marquette University in Milwaukee.
A career opportunity led Chuck into geophysics and a research position with CREWES at the University of Calgary, where he was employed from 2000 to 2008. He assumed his current position in February of this year.
