Abstract

In seismic data interpolation, problems associated with two kinds of issue need to be addressed:

  1. Irregular distribution of offset/azimuth at each CMP bin due to the nature of land acquisition with its many surface restrictions.
  2. Producing an image on a finer CMP grid than the natural grid defined by the acquisition parameters.

We refer to the first problem as "regularization" (i.e., regularizing offset/azimuth distribution at each CMP), and the second problem as "upsampling" (i.e., recasting sparse but regularly sampled data onto a more finely sampled regular grid). We will present a two-step approach which involves applying minimum weighted norm Fourier interpolation to regularize the data and then applying a local Radon Transform to upsample the data to a finer grid. We will analyze the advantages and limitations of the two interpolation methods, and demonstrate how to combine them to process various land surveys.
